one. two. ten.

Join us for the opening reception of One.Two.Ten, the 2nd annual Blue House Gallery group show featuring senior projects by graduating photography majors from the University of Dayton. This year Katriana Teoh, Katie Timko and Leigh Vukov debut new works that question the nature of portraiture through a diverse array of approaches, styles and processes. The exhibition is curated by Assistant Professor of Photography Glenna Jennings.

A face peering blankly through dripping chocolate, a group of “woodlings” engaged in odd rituals, a lonely pair of goggles confronting the viewer with a surreal stare - the three emerging artists featured in One. Two. Ten. share the medium of photography as a space of common ground. However, their respective approaches have resulted in bodies of work that interrogate and apply this practice in disparate ways. Their research interests range widely, from pseudo-ethnography and queer theory to romanticism, the body and feminist studies, but the stylistically disparate results share a question related to all artists who represent other human beings: How do we negotiate with the Other as subject of our gazes, even when that Other happens to be the Self?

The exhibition title derives from the number of subjects addressed in each artist’s project. Over the course of two semesters, the students created these Capstone projects and participated in rigorous production, critique and reflection. During this process, a conversation regarding the bond between the photographer and her chosen subject remained central. Whether confronting truths about the self or constructing fictions forged around others, the theme of Identity remains central to One.Two.Ten.
The exhibition is made possible through support from The University of Dayton Department of Art and Design, The College of Arts and Sciences, and The Blue House Gallery and Studios. Please join us for an Opening Reception on April 15th from 6-9pm and a Closing Reception for the Artists on April 29th from 6-9pm
